Music
I grew up in a home with music. It was either played by my mom on the piano or the guitar by my Dad. If neither were playing their instruments, music came through their vast collection of vinyl records. I was raised on a soundtrack of Pop, Gospel, R&B, Folk, and Rock. I've been thinking a lot about it lately. The tunes have stuck with me, but their meaning has grown over time.
Music is the ambassador of human hearts. It communicates in ways that are higher than spoken languages. It can cross great distances of space and time, connecting disparate peoples and cultures. Music lives in the roots of the cultures we come from and plays a significant role in determining who we are and who we are becoming. It guards our most cherished memories.
It has the power to impact our hearts immediately and over time.
The notes on a page and the accompanying lyrics leave traces of emotions behind—seeds of truth that grow over time. In the words of Cornel West, music is "A crucial leven in the human loaf. The very thing that can expand the best of what's inside of that loaf and the best of what's inside of us."
You can't listen to Sam Cooke singing A Change is Gonna Come and not believe it. That truth will sink into you and rise—songs like that change the world.
